Dissolved Air Flotation Systems (DAF)

 

What is a DAF system?

The Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) system is an essential piece of equipment for solid-liquid separation in industrial and municipal wastewater treatment.

DAF technology is designed to effectively remove:

  • Total Suspended Solids (TSS)
  • Biological and Chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD/COD)
  • Fats, Oils, and Grease (FOG)

It is considered the primary pretreatment method for effluent clarification.

 

How does a DAF system work?

A DAF unit injects fine air bubbles into the wastewater under high pressure. Once the pressure is released:

  • The microbubbles attach to suspended particles, lifting them to the surface
  • A thick layer of primary sludge forms at the top
  • An automatic surface scraper removes this sludge, while heavier particles settle and are discharged through a timed valve

To enhance efficiency, polymers and flocculants are typically added before flotation.

The entire system is fully automated and controlled by an industrial programmable logic controller (PLC).
